This Chardonnay is something very special: the South African wine from near Cape Town is produced with French passion by a family business in the Elgin Valley and enjoys a reputation as an excellent boutique wine. This classic white wine impresses with a fine fig and gooseberry flavour. Fruity nuances of lemons, apples and pears round off the flavour of this fresh and pure white wine. This South African white wine develops its full flavour when aged for three to six years.
The home of The Valley Chardonnay 2021 is the Elgin Valley in the Overberg region. An area in South Africa that is second to none. Less than 70 kilometres from Cape Town and just 20 kilometres from the Atlantic coast, the enchanting high plateau is well protected in the middle of the mountains. Fruit plantations and vines flourish in this fertile place. The water bubbles crystal clear in the streams and a salty sea breeze blows over the land. These are truly the best conditions for the production of exquisite red wines, rosés and white wines near Cape Town.
It comes as no surprise that winemaker Nico Grobler cultivates Chardonnay grapes in the enchanting Elgin Valley and matures the grape juice in oak barrels in the French style. The winegrowers of Burgundy and their quality wines inspired the South African Nico Grobler during an extended stay in France. He discovered his fondness for Chardonnay and made friends with the local winegrowers. Together with Frenchman Bruno Lorenzon, he still carefully handcrafts his oak barrels using wood from the forests of Burgundy and ships them to South Africa. A touch of his distant homeland pervades the South African wine with its French roots.
Nico Grobler's boutique and garage wines enjoy an excellent reputation in the Western Cape. Together with his wife Christelle, Nico Grobler shares a passion for wines in manageable quantities. The couple bottles red wines, rosés and white wines in their family business. Under the labels "La Brune" and "The Valley", the wines from the region in South Africa can be purchased in small bottling quantities. The production volume of The Valley Chardonnay 2020 comprises around 1,000 boxes of 6 bottles each and is quickly sold out. No wonder: the shimmering golden Chardonnay not only impresses with its French and South African soul, it also reflects the way of life in both countries. In Europe, the fresh white wine from near Cape Town is perfect as an aperitif on balmy summer evenings. In Africa, a Chardonnay is a favourite toast at sunset on safari or on the beach. Connoisseurs on both continents prefer to drink this fruity white wine straight before a meal or with light summer dishes.
