Rock 'n' roll fever

What does rock 'n' roll have to do with wine, you may ask. The answer is: a lot. At least that's what the young winemaker and owner of the Callan Williams winery claims The Garajeest in Elgin. At just 30 years old, she has already produced two premium wines and revitalised the winemaking scene with her unconventional approach.

Both wines bear the names of old rock 'n' roll legends: Bruce Springsteen was the namesake for the two-year-old Brucea Cabernet Franc that has matured for one year in barriques and one year in the bottle and therefore has an excellent ageing potential.

Jim on the other hand, is a Semillon with bottle fermentation and the namesake is... yes, Jim Morrison. For Callan Williams, good music (in her case rock music) and good wine go hand in hand. She says: "When you listen to music, you remember events, smells and feelings that you were experiencing at that moment. The same goes for wine. The aroma, flavour and smell of a wine can also bring back memories for a person. For me, good music, good wine and good food go together."

It is therefore not surprising that the name of their speciality bottling Cobain is. This wine is aged for three years. Only 100 (magnum) bottles were produced and she keeps to herself which wine it is. An interesting markeKng strategy that is very much in keeping with this unconvenKonal winemaker. One thing is for sure: Cobain is a high-calibre wine that will certainly soon reveal its secret.

In any case, we look forward to accompanying this winemaker on her road to success. "So, come on baby, light my fire", as Jim Morrison sings. Our heart burns for The Garajeest and Callan Williams.
