Wines from South Africa by Kardouw

The Cederberg region can be reached in just two and a half hours by car (approx. 280 km) from Cape Town. However, this drive takes you into a completely different landscape: wilder, warmer, with a rugged, dramatic beauty. Clanwilliam and Citrusdal offer high mountain ranges, orange and purple sunsets, and the air in springtime has a hint of orange blossom. Lambertsbaai and Elandsbaai, are true surfers' paradises, offering those "perfect waves" that many surfers have made their personal crusade to find. Restaurants with outdoor areas where tasty fish dishes can be savoured under the open sky and birdlife so abundant that it's easy to lose track of time watching them. Wupperthal and Elandskloof, two historic mission stations, are also located in this region and offer sightseeing and hiking opportunities. Explore the mountains on undisturbed hikes and dive into shallow rock pools for refreshment. Admire delicate cave paintings from the times of the Bushmen (San).

This undisturbed paradise has the answer to every whim and offers something for every taste. The extraordinary diversity of flora in this part of the so-called "Cape Floral Kingdom", where the world-famous "Rooibos Tea" (Rooibos tea) is grown only here between the rugged mountain ranges. The summers are very hot, cloudless and dry and at night you can marvel at a breathtaking starry sky. Winters are cold, there is little rainfall and the higher peaks may well wear a snow cap. 

Exclusive handcrafted wines

The vines that grow here are of exceptional quality due to the weather and soil conditions and this is where the story of Grettchen, the winemaker, and Gerrit, the citrus farmer, continues. They started vinifying small quantities of grapes. The Boutique Winery Piekenierskloof produces both Grenache and Cinsaut, harvested from old bush vines anchored in the deep, rich soil of the region, ripening small bunches of grapes with a highly concentrated flavour profile.

Less than 2000 bottles of Kardouw per season are bottled by Grettchen and her husband Gerrit and every aspect of winemaking here is traditional, pure manual labour. The result is an exclusive range of astonishing variety and outstanding quality. Grettchen says that for her and Gerrit it is a "wonderful thought that these wines, which they make with so much love and care, are enjoyed all over the world."
